Your company’s AI can live on a Mac Studio

Companies will soon be able to swap their cloud AI for a single Mac Studio in the office, and keep every prompt and document private.

Every day, someone at your company pastes something into a cloud AI chat that shouldn't leave the building. A customer contract. A spreadsheet of salaries. A chunk of proprietary source code. A patient note. They aren't being careless. They're trying to get their work done, and these tools are genuinely useful.

Most companies know this is happening. Some write policies against it. Some pay for enterprise tiers and trust the fine print. A few ban AI outright and watch employees use it on their phones anyway.

I think there's a better answer, and it fits on a desk.

The problem with cloud AI isn't the AI

The models are impressive. The problem is where they run. When you send a prompt to a cloud AI service, your data travels to servers you don't own, in a data center you've never seen, under terms of service that can change. Even with the best intentions from the provider, you've added another company to the list of places your sensitive information lives.

For a lot of businesses, that's a real problem:

  • Law firms have a duty to protect client confidences.
  • Healthcare practices handle records that come with strict rules about where they can go.
  • Finance and accounting teams work with numbers that can move markets or expose clients.
  • Software companies are, quite literally, made of their source code.

Then there's the bill. Per-seat subscriptions and usage-based pricing add up fast, and they never stop. You're renting intelligence by the month, forever.

What changed

Two things happened over the last couple of years that make a different approach possible.

First, open models got good. Models you can download and run yourself, like Qwen and Gemma, now handle the everyday work of most businesses well: summarizing documents, drafting emails, answering questions about internal files, explaining and fixing code. A few years ago that took a data center. Now it doesn't.

Second, Apple silicon changed the hardware math. Running a large model is mostly about memory. On a typical PC, the graphics card has its own small pool of memory, and the model has to fit inside it. Apple's chips use unified memory, so the processor and graphics share one large pool. A Mac Studio can be configured with far more memory available to AI models than a typical workstation graphics card offers, in a quiet box that sits on a shelf and uses a fraction of the power of a server rack.

A single Mac Studio, sitting in your office, can be your company's AI. No data center, no cloud bill, and no data leaving the building.

Where VoxyAI fits

I built VoxyAI to make running AI on your own Mac as easy as opening an app. It's free. There's no account, no license key and no subscription, and your words never touch a cloud AI service.

Today, VoxyAI already does a lot of what people use cloud AI for:

  • Chat with models running on your Mac, including images and PDFs.
  • Knowledge answers questions about your PDFs and Word documents, including scanned ones, with sources you can click to check.
  • Projects reads a folder, drafts documents and only changes files after you approve a preview.
  • Automations like a morning briefing, an end-of-day summary and meeting prep.
  • Coding tools such as Claude Code can connect to your Mac's own models.

VoxyAI also includes LLM Host, which lets your other devices use the models on your Mac over an encrypted connection. It works with apps that speak the OpenAI-compatible API, too. So the pieces for "one powerful Mac serving everyone" are already there.

What's coming for companies

The next step is VoxyAI Enterprise. The idea is simple: put a Mac Studio in your office and make it the AI for your whole team.

  • Shared models on a company Mac Studio, used from every employee's device.
  • A shared knowledge base, so the whole team can ask questions about the company's own documents.
  • Shared projects for teams working on the same material.
  • Automatic pairing of company devices through your MDM, so IT doesn't have to set up each one by hand.

One Mac Studio, the whole team

Every request goes to the Mac Studio, not to a cloud AI service.

The free app stays free, and IT teams can already deploy it to every Mac in the company at no cost. Enterprise will be a separate paid plan for the shared, team-wide features.

Being honest about the trade-offs

I don't want to oversell this. The biggest frontier models in the cloud are still ahead on the hardest problems, and a single Mac Studio is built to serve a team, not thousands of people at once. If your business depends on the absolute cutting edge, the cloud will keep a place in your toolbox.

But most AI use at work isn't that. It's summarizing a long thread, drafting a reply, finding the clause in a contract, explaining a function. For that kind of work, a local model is more than good enough, and it comes with something no cloud service can offer: your data never leaves your hands.

Own your AI

For years, the assumption has been that serious AI means sending your data to someone else. I don't think that's true anymore. A company can buy a Mac Studio once, put it in a closet and give every employee a private AI that answers to them, not to a provider's terms of service.

That's what I'm building with VoxyAI. If it sounds useful for your team, try the free app today, and keep an eye on this blog for news about Enterprise.
